Dopo un periodo di lavoro molto intenso, ritorno a scrivere qualche pensiero sul nostro complicato ambiente di lavoro.
Molti pensano che lavorare con le agenzie riduca il “rischio” ma spesso non è così, anzi il rischio “raddoppia”.

Nei mesi scorsi si è parlato più volte dell’agitazione e delle reazioni dei traduttori alle ennesime richieste “da fame”. Da questo attivismo dei traduttori nasce il movimento “No Peanuts!” e il bellissimo slogan “If you’re NOT a monkey, stop working for peanuts!”.

Dal 20 aprile è finalmente disponibile tramite Lulu l’atteso libro di Judy e Dagmar Jenner “Entrepreneurial Linguist: The Business-School Approach to Freelance Translation”.
Secondo le dichiarazioni delle autrici:

Il costo del libro, soprattutto nella versione e-book, è veramente ridotto, se bastassero davvero poco più di 12 euro per diventare imprenditori…

Nel settore la notizia è ormai sulla bocca di tutti: per continuare a lavorare con Lionbridge sarà necessario abbonarsi a Translation Workspace.
Nello specifico si dichiara sul sito di Lionbridge:
“Subscription-based, “pay-as-you-go” pricing eliminates up front software costs and infrastructure expenses and allows flexibility as workload changes. This means translators pay for technology only when they need it. Because Translation Workspace is Web-based, all translators work within their own secure, private environment on the same global platform with no upgrade costs, version control issues or maintenance fees. Finally, as Translation Workspace subscribers, translators can also register with Lionbridge as a service provider and qualify for new projects and business opportunities.”

In sostanza questo significa che la tariffa di un traduttore che lavora per Lionbridge verrà unilateralmente decurtata… ed ha quindi scatenato nuovamente la protesta dei traduttori con una nuova petizione che ad oggi conta 330 firme.
Che ne pensate?

Trascorriamo gran parte della giornata davanti al PC ma sappiamo come posizionarci correttamente per evitare problemi alla schiena e di altra natura?
Prima di tutto la schiena deve essere ben appoggiata alla sedia con anche piegate a 90° gradi rispetto agli arti inferiori e piedi ben appoggiati sul pavimento. Inoltre bisogna evitare di tenere lo schienale inclinato in avanti e, ad ogni modo, di lavorare per molte ore con il tronco flesso. Lo schienale può essere inclinato da 90° a 110° e può essere utile cambiare l’inclinazione durante la giornata.

La distanza dal monitor deve essere di circa 50-70 cm e gli occhi devono essere all’altezza della parte alta dello schermo, o poco al di sotto. Bisogna evitare posizioni a 45 gradi che obbligano il collo ad una posizione innaturale, regolando lo schermo in modo che lo spigolo superiore sia posto leggermente più in basso della linea degli occhi.
Il tavolo di lavoro deve consentire di appoggiare gli avambracci, in modo che il gomito resti a 90°.
Particolarmente importante è la scelta della sedia: questa deve essere ergonomica ad altezza regolabile e con una seduta di 40-45 cm.
Apparentemente la migliore sul mercato sarebbe la Herman Miller Aeron; il punto di forza di queste sedie sarebbe l’adattabilità a tutte le “stazze”. Pertanto, visto il prezzo (oltre i 1.000 euro), probabilmente le taglie “tradizionali” possono optare per modelli più economici. Personalmente ho optato per il modello conforme alla 626 di Ikea: VERKSAM in pelle nera.
Ha moltissime regolazioni ed un rapporto qualità/prezzo davvero imbattibile!

Comunque i modelli disponibili sul mercato sono moltissimi, l’importante è essere disposti ad investire sulla propria salute…non solo sulle performance del proprio PC!!!

Continua la telenovela della protesta contro ProZ.com. Dopo settimane di dialogo con i vertici del sito, “pare” che i traduttori abbiano ottenuto i cambiamenti richiesti. Oggi nella home di Proz si legge:
“Changes to be made to job posting system
Certain changes will be made to the ProZ.com job posting system. The changes will:
(1) emphasize that the translator is in the best position to determine the rates that s/he needs to charge to deliver the quality required in a given job, and
(2) eliminate the potential for the ProZ.com job system to be used to “popularize” low rates.”
E poi:
“A petition concerning the ProZ.com job posting system was submitted to the site team in early March. In response, an internal review was conducted. As a result of this review process, goals were identified and a plan was developed to make certain changes to the job posting system. A summary of the changes, and the objectives behind the changes, is presented here.
As a result of the internal review process that was sparked by the petition, the following goals were identified for the job posting system:

Eliminate the potential for the ProZ.com job posting platform to be used to “popularize” low rates.
Reaffirm the fact that the translator is in the best position to determine what he or she needs to charge to deliver the quality required on any given job.
Enable the job posting system to be used by experienced members of the ProZ.com community to share useful information with job posters on rates (and how to estimate them).
Enable the job posting system to be used by experienced members of the ProZ.com community to share useful information with fellow translators on rates (and how to set them).
Improve the image of the ProZ.com site, countering the impression that it condones unprofessional practices.
Encourage further, ongoing cooperation among the community around these issues and translator livelihood in general.
In order to achieve these goals, the following steps will be taken:

1. The pricing field will be removed from the job posting form.

This change is consistent with the fact that the individual translator is in the best position to determine what he or she needs to charge to deliver the quality required on a particular job.

2. When consistent with member preference, posters will be given an opportunity to specify a budget range (after having posted).

An option to enter budget information will appear, with a suitable explanation, when among those who meet the specified criteria there are one or more members who prefer to take budget information into consideration when deciding whether or not to quote.

3. Even when a client budget range has been specified, it will not be published by default.

Client budget ranges will be accessible only to members who (1) have expressed a preference to consider client budgets, and (2) meet the specified job criteria. (This eliminates the possibility for the job posting system to be used to “popularize” low rates.)

4. More information — supplied by the community — will be made available concerning the price of professional translation.

In the void left by the decreased publication of poster positions on rates, guides entitled “Determining what service you need and what it will cost” and “Determining your rates and fees as a translator”, will be introduced. These guides, linked to from the job posting and job quoting forms, are already being built by the ProZ.com community in the ProZ.com wiki. (Please consider contributing.)

Together with the guides, real-time data on rates charged by ProZ.com members will be made available for reference by job posters and those quoting. (This will be the topic of further notices in this site area.)

5. A means will be provided, and job posters will be encouraged, to enter more detailed information in job postings.

To quote accurately, jobs have to be posted in sufficient detail. Encouraging job posters to enter as much detail as possible becomes more important with these changes.

6. A means will be provided to enter more detailed rates information in profiles.

Profile owners will be given a means of entering more detailed rates information, such as premiums for rush jobs, etc.

7. The prominence of the job posting system will be reduced overall, with higher priority given to the directory.

The directory has proven to be a much better source of new clients for professional translators.

8. An addition will be made to the ProZ.com professional guidelines on the topic of rates.

Proposed addition: “Professionals: … set their rates at levels that allow them to deliver, on an ongoing basis, the quality levels that their clients require”

9. Efforts will be made to stimulate industry-wide cooperation to support the livelihood of professional translators.

Several ideas for how to approach this have been considered, but at a minimum, links to groups that are active in this area will be maintained. Please share information related to any groups or individuals that you know that are active in this area.

Of particular interest would be those active in the following areas:

differentiation on the basis of quality
establishing a more direct correlation between quality and price
techniques for boosting productivity
marketing / negotiation / business skills for translators

Note that although these have been areas of focus in ProZ.com events and trainings for some time, there is ongoing demand for training on these topics in various areas and languages. If you have developed programs in these areas, and would like to deliver trainings or sessions on these topics, please make a proposal via support ticket.

10. A host of other steps, both technical and social, will be undertaken. Updates will be posted here.”

Di certo si tratta di una reazione insperata dopo le varie discussioni di queste settimane (anche se il concetto di budget sembra avvicinarsi alle tariffe imposte (!!!)), ma avrà davvero effetti sull’intero settore?

Ormai è nell’aria. Il malcontento della categoria dei traduttori è ormai sotto gli occhi di tutti. Anche ignorando le continue rimostranze sulle tariffe offerte (si tratti di Proz, Langit o altro ancora), con la petizione a ProZ.com i traduttori si sono attivati e sono più che mai decisi ad agire. Ma a cosa potrà servire anche “ottenere” qualche cambiamento su ProZ? Un gruppo di traduttori ha comunque redatto una Proposal for a Reorganization of Proz.Com’s “Translation Industry Jobs” Board che a sua volta ha dato l’avvio ad un dibattito “privato” con il fondatore di ProZ. Tra le varie azioni in cui mi sono imbattuta mi ha particolarmente stupito quella rappresentata dal blog Il segno di Caino. L’incipit è davvero molto efficace: “The translator’s life isn’t all cocktails and canapés with big-name publishers. For as much as the profession can be rewarding, it can also be a Dickensian workhouse. And no more so than when (some) clients, publishers, and agencies offer sweatshop wages, refuse to pay for work the work they’ve commissioned, and basically treat translators like Kleenex: use and toss. But there’s too much silence among translators, and the omertà stops here. On Il Segno di Caino, we name names.”, anche se non trovo l’autore o gli autori del blog. E forse una ragione c’è visto che vengono letteralmente messi in piazza i nomi di agenzie/proprietari “cattivi”…al solito per basse tariffe, mancati pagamenti ecc. ecc. Ma forse non è arrivato il momento per noi traduttori di smettere di lamentarci e diventare finalmente imprenditori di noi stessi? Siamo liberi di accettare o meno un lavoro, come qualsiasi professionista ma dobbiamo anche assumercene il rischio…la libertà che ci offre la nostra professione è un valore ma ha pur sempre un prezzo…

Come ho accennato nel mio post inaugurale, oggi è in corso una nuova azione dei traduttori.

Infatti dopo la lettera di protesta dei traduttori pubblicata su varie testate (Corriere, La Repubblica ecc.) in relazione ad una proposta di lavoro abbastanza scandalosa di provenienza istituzionale (a cui è seguita la smentita dal Ministero del Turismo), oggi i traduttori si stanno muovendo per chiedere al noto portale ProZ.com di rivedere la propria politica sulle offerte di lavoro.
